Nick's gotten into barefoot running after reading Born to Run. He literally wears nothing on his feet and goes and runs outside. It's pretty crazy. For his birthday, he got the Vibram 5 fingers. It basically protects your feet from pebbles, but provides no support - so your foot muscles can get some exercise.
I won't go that far yet, but the Nike Frees are pretty similar. Give it a try. It'll be good for you :-)
